Buy iced cakes and cake mixes
Let’s face it, we’re not all Mary Berry or Paul Hollywood. And many of us will never make it off the sofa to win the Great British Bake Off. And you know what That’s absolutely fine.
An to be honest, sometimes it is just quicker and easier to either use a store bought cake or to cheat a little with a ready mix. The ready mixes these days are actually really good and there is a wide range of flavours and options for gluten-free and dairy-free as well. We’ve compiled a list of our favourites below.

Undecorated pre-iced cakes
If you’re short on time, or have no desire to make your own cake, there is a great range of pre-iced, undecorated cakes available which you can simply add your photo topper to, no fuss. There is a choice of flavours as well, including a very tasty fruit cake.

It’s not cheating! Here at Photo On A Cake, we all love to baking cakes, following the recipes and so on, but honestly, sometimes with our young families we just don’t have the time! So we tried and loved these cake and cupcake mixes. They are more affordable than store bought cakes, with easy to follow instructions with great results and they do look and taste homemade, so you can take a bit of credit for your work.
Also, cake mixes can be used for cupcakes too, so if you can’t find a flavour that you want, say you want carrot cupcakes or coffee cupcakes, no worries, just make the cake mix like you normally would and split it out evenly between cupcake mixes. Simples.

Gluten and dairy-free cake mixes
Having a family with members who are allergic to gluten (celiac disease) and dairy (lactose intolerant), we understand how important it is that no-one misses out on cake.
Our toppers are gluten free, Kosher certified, nut free as well as being suitable for vegetarians and vegans, but what about your cake that you’ll be putting them on to? Well, here’s a great range of options to help you out!

Icing and frosting
If you want to cover your entire cake, there are a few options available. Sugar Paste (also called Regal-Ice, or ready to roll icing or sometimes fondant icing) is that soft icing you’d get on a pre-decorated store bought cake, especially fruit cakes. We recommend you use a Sugar Paste (or Regal-Ice Ready Roll Icing) disc to lay underneath buttercream or chocolate icing – especially if you’re making your cake the day before!
You can make buttercream using 280g icing sugar, 140g butter, 1-2 TBSP Milk and we like to add a teaspoon of Vanilla for that rich taste; or if you’re pressed for time just use the Betty Crocker buttercream ‘style’ icings below (not recommended for dieters!!).
Finally, for cupcakes we just love the Tate & Lyle Fondant Icing Sugar which is mixed with a few teaspoons of water (exact measurements on packet) – this is then poured onto the cupcakes giving that lovely glazed look. We recommend letting this icing ‘harden’ slightly before finishing off with your cupcake photo topper.
